Cook Family Farms
Newark, DE has been home to our family since 1855. Over the years many generations of ancestors have been stewards of the land and each passed it down to the next. The family grew up at the farmhouse on Frazer Rd where the farm still operates today. Years ago, the family farmed over 1,200 acres in the Newark area, but as their farm friends began to sell the ground to developers that the Cook's rented, they continuously saw the average acres they covered decline. Until 2014, the family milked about 80 dairy cows until the family had to adapt to changing markets.
Today, the farm raises a variety of livestock and offers a wide vairety of local products that can be purchased right on the farm. The farm actively promotes agriculture education through collaborations with Delaware FFA and 4-H chapters and holds events for local youth and non-profit organizations. Dairy replacement heifers and a small dairy show string are still being raised for the next generation to show at the Delaware State Fair.
If you are looking for a local source of USDA inspected meat, homemade delicacies, ice cream and much more, check out the Cook Family Farm's website at the link below. While microgreens may not be available in your local supermarket, they will always be available here!
An Idea Took Root
Growing food at home was something Benjamin and Janine Somers commonly talked about, but there is only so much room in a small apartment. It was here that the first growing rack was constructed, and the first microgreens were planted. Over time, there were more than enough greens to go around, and word was spreading of the delicious health benefits they possessed. The idea of Cook Family Greens had taken root!
Being an eighth-generation member of a farming family, the couple moved back to Newark to start the venture, selling exclusively out of the Cook Family Farm market. With a deep respect for Delaware farming and Urban Agriculture practices, it is their goal to use the rising popularity of microgreens and local produce to bring awareness of ag preservation and small businesses to Delmarva consumers.
